A Louisville, Ky. physician and his practice, Kentuckiana Center for Better Bone and Joint Health, have agreed to pay nearly $350,000 to settle claims of Medicare overbilling, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.
Steven H. Stern, MD, faced allegations of falsely billing Medicare for infusing Infliximab, a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. From 2003-2006, Dr. Stern and his practice allegedly split vials of the drug across multiple patients and billed Medicare as if the entire vial was used for each patient.
The complaint was initially brought forward by a former employee of Kentuckiana Center, who will receive $70,000 of the settlement.
