A Kansas-area physician pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare and Medicaid, illegal distribution of prescription drugs and harassing a state investigator, according to a Kansas City Business Journal report.
Wayne W. Williamson, MD, admitted to billing Medicare and Medicaid for visits to government-subsidized, low-income apartment complexes. On those claims, he inflated the reported length of the visits. Dr. Williamson agreed to pay restitution for the false billing.
He additionally admitted to conspiring at apartment complexes and distributing prescriptions for oxycodone, Percocet and Xanax to people who did not need or resold the prescription medications from March 2006 to May 2008. In some cases, Dr. Williamson accepted payment for the prescriptions without performing medical exams. He also talked with customers about some drugs' resale street value. Dr. Williamson continued to write prescriptions even after his license to prescribe medications in Missouri was suspended in March 2008. After his license suspension, he prescribed more then 243,000 milligrams of oxycodone.
He also pleaded guilty to a third charge of harassing an investigator. He posed as a military source and sent letters threatening the investigator and also making false allegations.
Dr. Williamson is sentenced to three years in prison without parole and was ordered give up his medical license without the prospect of practice medicine in the country ever again.
