A Houston physician has been convicted of conspiracy, 14 counts of healthcare fraud and three counts of mail fraud, according to a Houston Chronicle report.
Christina Clardy, MD, worked at a Houston clinic that overbilled Medicare and Medicaid by $45 million over a two-year period for physician therapy services that were never rendered. When Dr. Clardy told clinic officials to stop billing under her name in 2007, federal prosecutors said she began receiving substantial kickbacks from the clinic's owner.
The clinic's owner, Umawa Imo, and another man were also convicted in the scheme. They could face up to 30 years in prison and $750,000 in fines if convicted of all the charges.
