A Hartford, Conn., physician has agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle government allegations that he billed Medicaid for services never rendered, according to a Hartford Courant report.
From 2004-2009, Mark W. Izard, MD, allegedly submitted claims for the treatment of nursing home patients who had already been transferred to local hospitals. He was also accused of billing for work at Hartford Hospital that was performed by the hospital's nursing staff and residents. An analysis of the physician's billing records showed he sometimes billed government programs for more than 24 hours of medical services in a single day.
Under settlement terms, Dr. Izard and his practice in Hartford are barred from federal healthcare programs for seven years. He has admitted no wrongdoing.
