RF Surgical, a provider of solutions for prevention and detection of retained surgical items, has announced it has signed a three-year agreement with Novation, according to an RF Surgical news release (pdf).
Under the agreement, Novation will provide the RF Assure Detection System to members of VHA, UHC and Provista.
RF Surgical Detection Technology can read through deep cavity tissue, fluids and bone to detect if radio frequency tagged surgical sponges, gauze or towels remain in a patient following surgery.
"Implementation of RF Surgical technology is rapidly growing as healthcare providers recognize the opportunity to eliminate the dangerous, costly medical error of retained surgical items," said Dr. Jeffrey Port, co-founder and chairman of RF Surgical, in the release. "Adjunctive technology for the prevention of retained surgical items in the operating room setting is fast becoming a 'must-have' tool for improving patient safety. We are thrilled to be the radio frequency detection technology provider of choice for Novation, and we look forward to the opportunity that the agreement presents to meet growing demand for this patient safety solution."
