ASAM Approves Prescription Drug Policy

In response to the growing prescription drug abuse problem, the American Society of Addiction Medicine has released a prescription drug policy, according to an ASAM news release.

The policy recommends all health professionals who prescribe scheduled medication are included in educational efforts to improve patient outcomes and public health. The policy also states one solution is to mandate prescriber education for all health professionals licensed to prescribe, dispense or administer prescription drugs. In addition, ASAM recommends a public health campaign including patient education; training for medical students and residents in safe prescribing practices, pain medicine and addiction medicine; coordinated state prescription drug monitoring programs and research on patterns of manufacture, distribution and sales of drugs.
