Virginia practice 2nd in state to use new ear tube procedure

Paul Lenkowski, MD, PhD, is the second ENT in Virginia to use a new ear procedure for children, reports local CBS affiliate WDBJ.

Dr. Lenkowski, of Roanoke Valley ENT and Allergy, is treating ear infections in children without general anesthesia, according to the report. He uses electricity to deliver medication to numb the eardrum and delivers the ear tube in less than a second.

"The biggest concern I see with families, particularly with babies, is the anesthesia component of the procedure, and so it will certainly set them at ease, so they can be relieved knowing that their children can have ear tubes without having to be put asleep at all," Dr. Lenkowski told the station.
