ENT physician pay: 5 things to know

ENT physicians were the third highest-paid specialists among those surveyed by Medscape in its 2020 compensation report, the most recent data available.

Orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons reported higher pay than ENT physicians, at $511,000 and $479,000 respectively. The report gathered responses from 17,000 physicians in 30 specialties.

Five things to know about ENT physician pay:

1. The average annual income for ENT physicians is $455,000.

2. Average incentive bonus is $91,000 per year, and 55 percent say they typically achieve their entire bonus.

3. Thirty-five percent of ENT physicians said their incentive bonus led to increased work hours, while 64 percent said the bonus didn't affect their number of hours worked. One percent said the bonus led to fewer hours worked.

4. Male ENT physicians earned $459,000 on average, which is 31 percent more than female ENT physicians, who earned $409,000 on average.

5. Half of otolaryngologists relied on fee-for-service payment models.
