The Boston Globe has named David G. Hunter, MD, PhD, co-founder of REBIScan, as a top innovator in Massachusetts for 2012, according to a news release.
Dr. Hunter and colleagues developed a laser eye scan that detects vision loss in preschool children before parents or pediatricians can identify a problem. REBIScan, based in Cambridge, Mass., is working to achieve FDA clearance for the Pediatric Vision Scanner, a device that in a 2.5-second scan of the eyes can automatically detect strabismus, amblyopia and other serious eye conditions in children as young as two years old.
"Vision loss from amblyopia is fully treatable if the condition is detected early, and yet about half of all cases go undiagnosed using existing technology, causing permanent vision loss," said Dr. Hunter, in the release. "When we are able to put this technology into the hands of pediatricians, we will be able to eliminate this silent theft of a child's eyesight."
Dr. Hunter is also professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in Boston and ophthalmologist in chief at Boston Children's Hospital.
