Ambulatory surgery centers in Iowa and Pennsylvania recently received visits by members of the House and Senate, according to a report from the ASC Association in its ASCA Government Affairs Update.
In Iowa, state Senate Majority Leader Paul McKinley (R) visited the Surgery Center of Des Moines–West, a visit planned by Pat Jepsen, the ASC's administrator, and the ASC's partner, Surgical Care Affiliates. Iowa state and federal legislators were invited to tour the facility following negative coverage from a local newspaper that raised questions regarding the oversight and potential licensure of ASCs, coverage which was picked up nationally.
In Pennsylvania, Congressman Tom Marino (R-PA) visit Kingston Surgery Center, a freestanding ASC owned by Eye Care Specialists. The tour was conducted by Barbara Halesey, the ASC's director, and Tom Ferris, CEO of Eye Care Specialists.
