SC Eye Surgeon to Broadcast Laser Cataract Surgery From ASC

Kerry Solomon, MD, an eye surgeon at Physicians' Eye Surgery Center in Charleston, S.C., is scheduled to perform laser cataract surgery at the ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center later this month and the procedure will be broadcasted live at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Orlando, according to a news release from Medical Consulting Group (doc).

Physicians' Eye Surgery Center, Dr. Kerry Solomon and Carolina Eyecare Physicians are clients of MCG.

Dr. Solomon will be using the Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser technology to perform the surgery, the first of four surgical procedures to be broadcasted live on Oct. 22. Following the procedure, Dr. Solomon will travel to the meeting, which is sponsored and hosted by Alcon, to address attendees.

Dr. Solomon contributed to the development of the LenSx laser technology; only a few lasers are in currently in use in the United States and abroad.

"With the arrival of the LenSx femtosecond laser, the United States now leads the way with the latest cataract surgery technology," said Dr. Solomon, in the release. "I feel privileged to be selected as one of the surgeons who will be giving many of my colleagues from across the world their first 'live' look at this important innovation at work."

The patient undergoing the procedure will receive the cataract surgery at no-cost as the first beneficiary of a new not-for-profit organization called the Operation Sight Foundation, founded by Drs. Solomon and John Boatwright, who both work out of the ASC and Carolina Eyecare Physicians. These surgeons, along with colleagues in the South Carolina Lowcountry region, will provide eye surgery at no cost to uninsured area residents who meet the organization's guidelines. Operation Sight will provide all pre- and post-operative care as well, with the help of a number of local optometrists who have volunteered their services.
