Pioneering Ophthalmologist Dr. Robert C. Welsh Dies at Age 89

Robert C. Welsh, MD, an ophthalmologist who helped build the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine died Jan. 8 at the age of 89, according to an OSN Supersite report.

Dr. Welsh was the first U.S. ophthalmologist to specialize in cataract surgery and founded the Welsh Cataract Congress in 1969, which continues today at Baylor College of Medicine. His other notable contributions to the field include founding the first Contact Lens International Congress, launching the Volunteer Eye Surgeons Association and developing a portable surgical microscope used to treat patients in rural areas, which was used by the U.S. military in Operation Desert Storm.

Dr. Welsh received his medical education and ophthalmology training at Duke University, Duke Medical School and Harvard Postgraduate Medical School. He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Honor Award and the Maumenee Gold Award from Baylor College of Medicine for excellence in education in cataract surgery.
