Premium IOLs Complicate Informed Consent Process for Cataract Surgery

The increase in available premium intraocular lenses has made the informed consent process for cataract surgery more complex, Charles M. Zacks, MD, of the Maine Eye Center in Portland, Maine, told the audience at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute 50th Anniversary Scientific Meeting, according to an OSN Supersite report.

Dr. Zacks stressed the importance of providing patient-centered care and not talking patients into fancier or more expensive IOLs. He also said that physicians should not accept inducements for referrals or kickbacks.
