Dr. Ruth D. Williams Begins Term as President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Ruth D. Williams, MD, president of the Wheaton (Ill.) Eye Clinic, began her term at the 115th president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, according to an AAO news release.

Dr. Williams, who specializes in glaucoma treatment, attended medical school at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. She interned at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill., and completed an ophthalmology residency at California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco. She also completed glaucoma fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and at Shaffer Associates in San Francisco.  

Dr. Williams also served on the academy's Board of Trustees for the past year as president-elect, secretary for member services from 2005-2010 and trustee-at-large from 2000-2004. She also led the academy's young ophthalmologist program.
