10 Profiles of Leading Surgery Center Executives Presenting at the 18th Annual Ambulatory Surgery Centers Conference (Oct. 27-29; Chicago)

Here are profiles of 10 leading ambulatory surgery center company executives scheduled to speak at the upcoming 18th Annual Ambulatory Surgery Centers Conference, taking place Oct. 27-29 at the Westin Hotel on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Note: Executives are listed in alphabetical order by last name.

 

David F. Bacon Jr. Mr. Bacon, founder and CEO of Meridian Surgical Partners, will be joined by Joe Clark, EVP & CDO for Surgical Care Affiliates, and Geoffrey C. Cockrell, partner with McGuireWoods, to present "Private Equity’s Role in and View of the ASC Market" on Oct. 27 at 3:55 p.m. CDT. Mr. Bacon has more than 22 years of experience in healthcare, previously serving as the CEO and CFO of Medifax-EDI. He also has experience in public accounting with Lattimore, Black, Morgan & Cain.

 

Andrew Hayek. Mr. Hayek, president and CEO of Surgical Care Affiliates and chairman of the ASC Advocacy Committee, will present "The State of the Unions for ASCs" on Oct. 28 at 11:25 a.m. CDT. Prior to SCA, Mr. Hayek served as a division president at DaVita, a renal dialysis company. During his career, he was also the president and COO of Alliance Healthcare Services, a diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy company.

 

I. Naya Kehayes, MPH. Ms. Kehayes, managing principle and CEO of Eveia Health Consulting & Management, will be joined by Matt Kilton, principal and COO of Eveia, to present "Managed Care Contracting - 1) How Do You Align Your ASC with Physicians 2) Update on CMS Payment System and How it Impacts on Negotiations 3) Fee Schedule Numbers and Ensuring Revenue Collection From Contracts" on Oct. 28 at 2:00 p.m. CDT. Ms. Kehayes previously served as regional director of operations and managed care of National Surgery Centers. She also coordinated orthopedic development in the Northwest and was a surgical hospital administrator for Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation.

 

Brent W. Lambert, MD, FACS. Dr. Lambert, principal and founder of Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America, will be joined by Luke Lambert, CFA, CASC, CEO of ASCOA, to present "Key Concepts to Fixing Physician Hospital Joint Ventures Gone South" on Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Lambert is a board-certified ophthalmologist and previously developed and owned three ambulatory surgical centers, including the first eye ASC in New England. Dr. Lambert is currently responsible for business development at ASCOA.

 

Jeff Leland. Mr. Leland, CEO of Blue Chip Surgical Partners, will present "Business Planning for Orthopedic- and Spine-Driven Centers" on Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. CDT. Mr. Leland previously served as executive director of Lutheran General Medical Group, a 260-physician, multi-specialty medical group in Chicago. In the past he served as a senior-level executive with Advocate Health Care in Chicago, where he was responsible for business development and Advocate's 225,000-member health plan.

 

Tom Mallon. Mr. Mallon CEO and co-founder of Regent Surgical Health, will be joined by Dr. Lambert; Michael E.Russell, II, MD, president of Physician Hospitals of America and Texas Spine & Joint Hospital; and Tom Price, MD, U.S. Congressman for a presentation moderated by Sam Donaldson, ABC News Veteran and former Chief White House, correspondent for ABC News, on "ASCs, Healthcare and Washington D.C." on Oct. 28 at 8:50 a.m. CDT. Mr. Mallon was previously a partner with Gryffindor Capital Partners, a Chicago-based venture-capital fund, and at Same Day Surgery, which acquired five distressed and underutilized ASCs and a physician management company. Prior to joining Same Day Surgery, he was vice president of leasing and marketing for JMB Realty and later for Miglin-Beitler Developments, both in Chicago.

 

Jon O'Sullivan. Mr. O'Sullivan, a senior principal and founding member of VMG Health, will be joined by Greg Koonsman, senior partner of VMG Health, to present "How Do You Value Your ASC For Sale? What is the Value in a Majority Sale Transaction? Can Hospitals Pay More if They can Convert to an HOPD or Apply Managed Care Contracts? What is the Value in a Sale of a Small Percentage to a Physician?" on Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. CDT. Mr. O'Sullivan has experience in transactional advisory services in the healthcare market, financial valuation and joint ventures. He previously founded PracticeTech, a provider of network technology solutions and support within the healthcare industry.

 

Charles Peck, MD, FACP. Dr. Peck, president and CEO of Health Inventures, will present "Impact of Healthcare Reform on Physician Practices and ASCs" on Oct. 27 at 3:10 p.m. CDT. Dr. Peck has more than 30 years of healthcare experience as a clinician, internist, rheumatologist, scientist and other roles within the healthcare environment. As CEO of Health Inventures, he actively oversees the company's growth in outpatient surgery partnerships as well as physician practice management and inpatient perioperative management with hospitals and physicians.

 

Caryl Serbin, RN, BSN, LHRN. Ms. Serbin, executive vice president and chief strategy officer for SourceMedical, will present "Should You Outsource Billing and Collections or Keep It in House?" on Oct. 27 at 1:45 p.m. CDT. Ms. Serbin was founder and CEO of Serbin Surgery Center Billing, which was acquired by SourceMedical as the core of their new billing division, Revenue Cycle Solutions. Ms. Serbin has more than 25 years experience in healthcare industry, with the last 18 years spent in ambulatory surgery administration and consulting.

 

Larry Taylor. Mr. Taylor, president and CEO of Practice Partners in Healthcare, will present "The 5 Best and Worst Specialties for ASCs: An Outlook for the Next Five Years" on Oct. 29 at 8:15 a.m. CDT. Mr. Taylor has more than 30 years experience in healthcare delivery, management and physician relations. He previously served as president and COO for a large provider of ASCs and has worked with physicians on projects ranging from acute care to diagnostics, physical rehabilitation and outpatient surgery centers. Mr. Taylor entered healthcare as a certified athletic trainer and focused on delivery of sports medicine and orthopedic care.
