Aiden Center for Day Surgery (Addison, Ill.). Aiden Center for Day Surgery is a 14,000-square-foot surgery center with four operating rooms and two GI/endoscopy rooms. More than 60 physicians perform procedures at multispecialty surgery center. The center offers gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, podiatry and more. Aiden Center for Day Surgery is Joint Commission accredited and managed by Oak Brook Medical Management.
 
Ambulatory Surgery Center of Western New York (Amherst). The surgery center includes six operating rooms, three procedure rooms and a recovery room. The multispecialty center was established in 1999, and it is owned and operated by physicians. It performs approximately 15,000 cases per year, and offers surgical services in ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, ENT, podiatry and pain management. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Asheville (N.C.) Surgery Center. The 30,000-square-foot surgery center features nine operating rooms and two procedure rooms. It performs more than 25,000 outpatient procedures annually. It offers care in numerous specialties, including ENT, general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology and urology. The center is a part of Asheville-based Mission Health.

Ashton Center for Day Surgery (Hoffman Estates, Ill.). Ashton Center for Day Surgery, managed by Oak Brook Medical Management, has four operating rooms. More than 40 physicians perform procedures at the 15,000-square-foot center. The Joint Commission-accredited center offers gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, podiatry, and other specialties.

Bend (Ore.) Surgery Center. The center includes four operating rooms, three procedure rooms and performs 11,000 procedures annually. Developed in 1997, the center is Medicare-certified and accredited by the Joint Commission. It offers procedures in a wide array of specialties, including gastroenterology, pain management, gynecology, podiatry, urology, ENT and orthopedics.

"To successful run a large high-volume ASC, administrators should "ask about the potential of new cases for your center and what it would take to bring those cases to your facility," says Neal Maerki, RN, CASC, administrator of Bend Surgery Center."Maintain quality equipment in your ORs and quality staff, without these two you may find it hard to attract new cases."

Capital City Surgery Center (Raleigh, N.C.). The 30,000-square-foot surgery center includes six operating rooms and three procedure rooms. Physicians offer services in a number of specialties, such as general orthopedics, hand, spine, ENT, ophthalmology, general surgery and urology. The center was formed as a joint venture between Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals, community-based physicians from the Triangle area and Compass Surgical Partners. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Cedar Park (Texas) Surgery Center. Cedar Park Surgery Center, operated by Arise Ventures, is housed in a 10,000-sqare-foot medical office building. The center has five operating rooms. Physicians perform procedures in orthopedics, urology, general surgery, spine and pain management.

El Camino Ambulatory Surgery Center (Mountain View, Calif.). The surgery center includes six operating rooms and one procedure room. The multispecialty ASC is managed by E3 Healthcare. It is located on the campus of El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

Fort Sutter Surgery Center (Sacramento, Calif.). The surgery center includes nine operating rooms and it performs more than 1,000 cases per month. The center completed a $10 million renovation in May after merging with Sutter River City Surgery Center. The center is a limited partnership by Sutter Health and a physician LLC, Eggsoup. It offers surgical services in a wide array of specialties, including gastroenterology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, ENT, urology and vascular surgery.

"The success of a high-volume, multispecialty surgery center hinges on the smooth flow from registration to discharge," said Administrator Raymond Sainz. "Well-trained staff, from ancillary to clinical, combined with the managers possessing excellent critical thinking skills provides your solid base. Cap this off with physicians who are invested in the centers' success and you have the keys for a positive patient experience."

Gulf Coast Surgery Center (Sarasota, Fla.). Established in 2003, the surgery center includes five operating rooms, each encompassing 400 square feet. The surgery center itself is 17,179 square feet and its medical staff includes orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, spine surgeons, general surgeons and pain management specialists.

Hays Surgery Center (Kyle, Texas). The 14,000-square-foot Hay Surgery Center has five operating rooms. The center, opened in late 2012, offers orthopedics, podiatry, gynecology, urology, general surgery, spine and pain management procedures. The surgery center is operated by Arise Ventures.

Jackson Surgery Center (Montgomery, Ala.). The 20,000-square-foot Jackson Surgery Center has six ORs and four GI procedure suites. "We are a multispecialty facility performing GI and pulmonary procedures, as well as orthopedics, plastics, ENT, general, urology, GYN, and podiatry surgeries," says administrator Elise Sailors, MSN, CNOR, CASC."We perform approximately 950 cases per month." The multispecialty center is Joint Commission-accredited.

Medarva Stony Point Surgery Center (Richmond, Va.). Medarva Stony Point Surgery Center has four ORs and three preoperative rooms. The surgery center offers pain management, colorectal surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, plastics, podiatry, gastroenterology, general surgery, hand, oral surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics and urology procedures. The facility is accredited by AAAHC.
 
Montgomery (Ala.) Surgical Center. The surgery center features eight operating rooms, 16 preoperative bays, 19 recovery bays, two expanded endoscopy suites and a business office. It was established in 1984 by a group of local physicians and is the first freestanding surgery center licensed in the state of Alabama. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and offers general surgery, gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery and pain management procedures.

North Suburban Surgery Center (Thornton, Colo.). The surgery center includes four operating rooms, five private pre-operative rooms, four post anesthesia care unit recovery beds/bays and a minor procedure/pain management treatment room. The surgery center is fully licensed, and its physicians provide surgical services in gynecology, orthopedics, ENT, podiatry, ophthalmology, hand surgery and plastic surgery.

Oak Brook (Ill.) Surgical Centre. Oak Brook Surgical Centre, managed by Oak Brook Medical Management, is a 15,000-square-foot multispecialty ASC. The surgery center has five operating rooms. More than 100 physicians perform procedures in gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, podiatry, urology, and other specialties. "OBSC was the first independent multi-specialty ASC in DuPage County, the first in the state of Illinois to do outpatient LAVH," says Alfonso del Granado, Oak Brook Medical Management associate administrator for compliance affairs. "OBSC is also proud of its SSI rate of 0.5 per thousand -- practically a tenth the national average for ASCs."

Orthopedic Surgery Center (Gainesville, Fla.). Established in 2000, the surgery center features five operating rooms and 15 recovery bays. It is a 16,500-square-foot fully licensed facility and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The center is a part of The Orthopaedic Institute a private practice group comprised of 27 physicians providing the complete spectrum of musculoskeletal care, including sports medicine services and rheumatology.

Outpatient Services East Ambulatory Surgery Center (Birmingham, Ala.). The surgery center includes six operating rooms, six GI rooms, a cystoscopy suite and stereotactic suite. The center encompasses 32,000 square feet and includes more than 90 staff members. According to Debbie Cooner, administrator and CEO of Outpatient Services East, the center performed more than 15,500 cases in 2013. Opened in 1985, it is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It provides care in numerous specilaties, such as general surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, ENT, urology and pain management.

"Our advice to other centers seeking to run a large, high volume ASC is summed up in the word "efficiency,. All processes from scheduling the patient to billing for services and receiving payment must be as streamlined as possible, with very minimal variation," said Ms. Cooner. "Maintaining these processes requires buy-in from motivated staff, which is your center's greatest asset. Sharing data with staff and including them in making decisions creates a sense of ownership and goes a long way in assuring a large volume center continues to run as smoothly as possible."

Paso del Norte Surgery Center (El Paso, Texas). The 14,500-square-foot facility includes five operating rooms and one procedure room. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and includes a medical staff of 24 physicians. The center offers outpatient procedures in orthopedics, general surgery, gastroenterology, ENT, podiatry, gynecology and pain management.

Raleigh (N.C.) Orthopedic Surgery Center. The surgery center features four operating rooms, seven preoperative bays, 17 recovery days and two procedure rooms. It is a joint venture between Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic and Rex Healthcare and was opened in 2013. The 27,707-square-foot facility is accedited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Its physicians offer hand, wrist and elbow surgery, shoulder surgery, hip surgery, knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery and pain management procedures.

Rose Surgical Center (Denver). The surgery center includes five operating rooms, four GI endoscopy suites, two pain management suites and two overnight rooms as it offers 23-hour stays. It offers surgical services in a wide array of specialties, including orthopedics, podiatry, general surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, gastroenterology and urology.

Seven Hills Surgery Center (Henderson, Nev.). Opened in 2003, the surgery center features five operating rooms. It is certified by CMS and accredited by The Joint Commission. It provides care in a number of specialties, such as ENT, gynecology, plastic surgery, podiatry, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, pain management and gastroenterology.

Shiley Outpatient Surgical Center (La Jolla, Calif.). The surgery center includes four operating rooms. It is a part of the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center, an academic eye center. It offers care across all ophthalmic specialties, including glaucoma, cornea and refractive surgery and optometry.

Siouxland Surgery Center (Dakota Dunes, S.D.). The surgery center features six operating rooms. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and licenced by the state of South Dakota. Its physicians perform procedures in numerous specialties, such as neurosurgery, ENT, general surgery, podiatry, pain management and gastroenterology.

The Surgery Center of Charleston (S.C.). The surgery center features four operating rooms and surgeons with expertise in ENT surgery. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare and by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Its medical staff comprises 12 physicians, and it performs 5,300 procedures annually.

"The key to running a successful high-volume ASC is definitely team work. Team work allows you to provide quicker turn over times, improved patient care and improved satisfaction for both patients and physicians. Cross training employees to various areas is also key. Cross training allows you to better control staffing costs and leads to better trained and more satisfied employees," said Tammy Andrews, director of the surgery center.

Stonegate Surgery Center (Austin, Texas). Stonegate Surgery Center is located in a medical complex. The ASC expanded in 2009 and now has five operating rooms. Stonegate Surgery Center offers orthopedics, podiatry, gynecology, urology, general surgery, spine and pain management procedures. The ASC is operated by Arise Ventures.

UPMC Hamot Surgery Center (Erie, Pa.). UPMC Hamot Surgery Center, established in 2001, performs approximately 18,000 cases per year. The center has six ORs and five procedure rooms. Teva M. Eiler serves as administrative director of the center. Specialties offered at the ASC include orthopedics, pain management, ENT, dental, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, podiatry, urology and gastroenterology.

Unity Linden Oaks Surgery Center (Rochester, N.Y.). The freestanding, multispecialty center includes four operating rooms and its physicians are all either board-certified or board-eligible. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and licenced by the state of New York. It offers surgical services in ENT, general surgery, podiatry, plastic surgery, orthopedics and ophthalmology.

Waverly Surgery Center (Palo Alto, Calif.). The surgery center features four operating rooms and two treatment rooms. The multispecialty center was established in 2012 and includes approximately 17 physician partners. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Care, and in 2012, it performed 6,648 procedures. It is managed by E3 Healthcare. The center offers surgical services in a wide array of specialties, such as gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, ENT and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
