16 ASC Administrators Celebrating 10+ Years at the Same Center

Jennifer Arellano, Pueblo (Colo.) Surgery Center. Ms. Arellano joined Pueblo Surgery Center in March 1998 as a marketing coordinator. She was promoted to administrator in 1999. The center is a partnership between St. Mary-Corwin Hospital, Centura Health and Surgical Care Affiliates. It is a multispecialty facility hosting more than 3,000 procedures annually in pain management, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastics, gynecology, podiatry and dental. "I am proud to be among no less than eight teammates celebrating a decade or more at such a stable and successful facility this year," said Ms. Arellano. Three of her teammates have been with the facility for more than 20 years. "As a team, we have overcome countless challenges and celebrated many successes together. I am very fortunate to be part of a working family dedicated to providing excellent patient care and creating wonderful memories together, year after year," she said.

Leslie Cottrell, Baptist Physicians Surgery (Lexington, Ky.). Ms. Cottrell has served as associate administrator of the surgery for 14 years. She manages the multispecialty surgery center, which includes eight operating rooms and six procedure rooms. Surgical services in a wide range of specialties are offered at the center, including lap-band bariatric surgery, minimally invasive back surgery, colorectal surgery, general surgery, gastroenterology, orthopedics, urology and pain management.

Brenda Cyrulik, Eastland Medical Plaza Surgicenter and Bloomington Normal Healthcare Surgery Center (Bloomington/Normal, Ill.). Ms. Cyrulik has headed the surgery center for 15 years. The surgery center was formed in 2010 when Eastland Medical Plaza SurgiCenter — on the OSF St. Joseph Medical Center campus in Bloomington, Ill. — acquired Bloomington-Normal Healthcare Surgery Center in Normal, Ill., according to a Pantagraph report. Ms. Cyrulik has been with Eastland since 1999, when the center was entirely owned by St. Joseph. Prior to joining Eastland, Ms. Cyrulik served as a surgery manager at BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Ill., and worked as a circulating staff nurse at Gailey Eye Surgicenter in Bloomington, Ill., for two years.  

John Gleason, CASC, CMPE, Berks Center for Digestive Health (Wyomissing, Pa.). Mr. Gleason is the executive director for the surgery center. It includes a five-room endoscopy center, and Digestive Disease Associates, a 14-physician gastroenterology practice located in Reading, Pa. Mr. Gleason has been affiliated with DDA and BCDH for 11 years, first as administrator of BCDH and subsequently taking over as executive director for both organizations. Prior to that, Mr. Gleason had six years administrative experience in dialysis centers.

Michael Gossman, Cedar Lake Surgery Center (Biloxi, Miss.). Mr. Gossman has served as administrator of the surgery center for the last 18 years. He previously served as administrator of Lake Forrest Surgery Center and Methodist Ambulatory Surgery Center. He is a member of Medical Group Management Association and has previously served as president of Mississippi Ambulatory Surgery Association. Cedar Lake Surgery Center is a privately owned, 16,000-square-foot facility. It offers care in a number of specialties, including endoscopy, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology and pain management.

Kimble Hatridge, Texarkana (Texas) Surgery Center. For nearly 19 years, Ms. Hatridge has served as administrator of the surgery center, which was established in 1995. The surgery center provides care in a number of specialties, including ear, nose and throat, gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, podiatry, neurosurgery spine procedures and urology.

Kathleen Hickman, Dutchess Ambulatory Surgical Center (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). For 13 years, Ms. Hickman has served as administrator of the surgery center. She also served as clinical director. She previously served as emergency medical technician and president of Pleasant Valley Rescue Squad, before which she was a health center administrator/nursing administrator at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente. She leads the multispecialty Dutchess Ambulatory Surgical Center, which includes two operating rooms and an endoscopy or pain management suite. The center offers services in gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology and otolaryngology, among others.

Kenneth Hoffman, CPA, Endoscopy Center of Western New York (Williamsville). Mr. Hoffman has been the administrator of the Endoscopy Center of Western New York since it opened in 2004, and since 1999, he has also been the practice administrator for Gastroenterology Associates, the medical practice that includes all the physicians who perform procedures at the ambulatory surgery center. Before joining Gastroenterology Associates, Mr. Hoffman was a partner in a national accounting firm where he had more than 24 years of accounting and tax experience primarily related to physicians and physician practices.  

Steven Klein, Sheepshead Bay Surgery Center (New York.). Mr. Klein opened the surgery center in April 1999 and has managed it since. The center is a single specialty ophthalmic facility with around 35 surgeons routinely utilizing the facility. The center includes pre- and postoperative rooms, two operating rooms, a laser procedure room, a business and medical records office and a staff lounge. The center is accredited by the Joint Commission. The center performs more than 5,000 procedures annually, according to Mr. Klein. The majority of procedures are cataract, but in addition to those, physicians at the center perform glaucoma, retina and ocular plastics. "I have been very fortunate to work with a great team of employees," wrote Mr. Klein in an email. "They are hard working, reliable, professional and customer oriented."

Terry Mooney, Bartlesville (Okla.) Surgery Center. Mr. Mooney has served as administrator of the Nueterra Healthcare-managed surgery center since 2007. He started his career at Bartlesville as a business manager. The surgery center, established in 2001, is a collaboration between area physicians and the Bartlesville Medical Corporation. It includes three operating rooms and two procedure rooms, and it is accredited by CMS.
 
Barbara Narenkivicius RN, CASC, Indian River Surgery Center (Vero Beach, Fla.). Ms. Narenkivicius began her 14-year career at Indian River Surgery Center as an operating room registered nurse. She was then promoted to director of nursing and later administrator, the position in which she has remained for nearly 12 years. The multispecialty facility is an affiliate of SCA and features four operating rooms and two procedure rooms seeing more than 5,000 cases per year. "Our success is the result of building great teams with a steady focus on clinical excellence," said Ms. Narenkivicius. "Our facility is dedicated to serving not only our patients, but our physician and teammates — and we have high satisfaction scores that illustrate that." Ms. Narenkivicius was recently promoted to a group administrator serving nearby West Coast Endoscopy Center in Clearwater, Fla., and Citrus Surgery Center in Lecanto, Fla., as well as Indian River.

Penny Nichols, Greater New Orleans Surgery Center. Ms. Nichols has served as administrator for nearly 12 years. She previously served as business office supervisor at East Bank Internal Medicine Group and administrator of Total Orthopedic Care in New Orleans. She has an MBA from Columbus (Ohio) University.

Linda Phillips, RN, Southgate (Mich.) Surgery Center. For the last 17 years, Ms. Phillips has served as administrator of the independent surgery center, which is accredited by Medicare and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The center offers services in a wide array of specialties, including gastroenterology, ophthalmology and pain management surgical care. It recently acquired the ORA System to support its ophthalmic surgeon.

Jim Sigler, CASC, Casper (Wyo.) Surgical Center. Mr. Sigler has headed Casper Surgical Center for 11 years. He previously served as the administrator for Health Inventures and a physician liaison for the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. The surgery center offers care in many specialties such as anesthesiology, dental surgery, urology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, podiatry and orthopedics.

Dana Yocum, Mid Rivers Surgery Center (Saint Peters, Mo.). Ms. Yocum has been the administrator of the USPI-managed surgery center for the last 10 years. She previously served as the administrator for Pismo Beach, Calif.-based SurgCenter Development. The surgery center is accredited by Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and includes two operating rooms and one treatment room. The center is staffed by physicians who have a professional interest in ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, podiatry, ear, nose and throat and gastroenterology.

Cindy Young, Surgery Center of Farmington (Mo.). For the last 14 years, Ms. Young has served as the administrative director the medical center. She also served as a board member of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. She manages 28 employees, 16 credentialed physicians, two operating rooms and two procedure rooms. Prior to joining the Surgery Center of Farmington, Ms. Young served as a staff nurse at Arcadia Valley Hospital in Pilot Knob, Mo. This freestanding ASC is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is certified by Medicare.
