Tenet appoints retired 4-star US Army general, L1 Health managing partner to board: 5 things to know

Tenet Healthcare appointed two new independent directors amid a year-long board shake-up.

Here are five things to know.

1. The two new board members include retired four-star U.S. Army General Lloyd Austin, III, and L1 Health Managing Partner Meghan FitzGerald, DrPH. Both new independent board members have extensive leadership experience and Lead Director Bob Kerrey is confident both will add value to the company.

"We have been steadfast in our commitment to accelerate change across the company," said Executive Chairman and CEO Ron Rittenmeyer. "This applies to all facets of operations and all levels of leadership, including adding five new directors to our board in the last seven months. Lloyd and Meg have remarkable experience and will offer new and valuable insights as we continue to improve performance and drive value for our shareholders."

2. Mr. Austin spent 41 years in the U.S. Army, including three years as a commander of U.S. Central Command, responsible for military strategy and joint operations in a region that includes Iraq, Syria, Iran and Afghanistan. He also spent time as the vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army and currently serves as director of United Technologies Corp., and Nucor Corp.

3. In addition to serving as managing partner at investment fund L1 Health, Ms. FitzGerald is an assistant professor of health policy at New York City-based Columbia University. Before joining L1, Ms. FitzGerald spent a year as executive vice president of strategy and policy at Cardinal Health and five years as president of Cardinal's specialty solutions division.

4. Earlier this month, Tenet named Paola Arbour senior vice president and CIO as well as Marie Quintana as senior vice president and chief marketing officer. The company has made several other leadership appointments in the past year, since Mr. Rittenmeyer took the helm.

5. The company's ambulatory division, United Surgical Partners International, recorded a 9.5 percent net operating revenue increase for the first quarter of 2018, and 2.7 percent same facility growth.
