1. On average, ophthalmologists earn $357,000 a year.
2. U.S.-trained ophthalmologists earn $353,000 on average.
3. Foreign-trained ophthalmologists earn $448,000 annually.
4. Men outnumber women in ophthalmology: 73 percent of white ophthalmologists are male and 63 percent of Asian ophthalmologists are male.
5. Self-employed ophthalmologists earn an average of $429,000 yearly compared to $256,000 for employed ophthalmologists.
6. Over half — 58 percent — of ophthalmologists are self-employed.
7. Full-time male ophthalmologists earn $391,000, while full-time female ophthalmologists earn $273,000.
8. Female ophthalmologists are more likely to be employed than their male peers; 45 percent of female ophthalmologists and 37 percent of male ophthalmologists are employed.
9. Over half — 54 percent — of ophthalmologists feel fairly compensated.
