In Study, Physicians Say Defensive Medicine is Rampant, Call for Tort Reform

A new study finds that 91 percent of physicians believe their colleagues perform defensive medicine, ordering extra tests and procedures to protect themselves against lawsuits, according to a release by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

More than 90 percent also believe better protection against unwarranted malpractice suits is necessary to reduce the number of unnecessary medical tests.

Authors of the study, in the current issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, report that about $60 billion is spent on defensive medicine each year.
