Using a split-dosage schedule is a more effective bowel cleansing method than a single dosage before colonoscopies, according a study by Italian researchers published in the August issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Endoscopists performing the colonoscopies without knowledge of their patient's dosage schedule (split or single) reported superior cleansing results for split dosage patients — 75.2 percent good/excellent results — compared to 43 percent good/excellent results for single dosage.
The lower volume (split dosage) bowel prep solution of polyethylene glycol had "superior palatability" compared to the larger volume (single dosage).
