Study Shows More Evidence of Link Between H. Pylori, Parkinson's Disease

Research presented at the general meeting of the American Society for Microbiology shows more evidence of a link between Helicobacter pylori bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers and the development of Parkinson's disease, according to a report by Medical News Today.

Stomach ulcers have been linked to Parkinson's disease as far back as the 1960s, and a number of recent studies found Parkinson's patients were more likely to be infected with H. pylori bacteria that cause ulcers.

Researchers at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center infected young and aged mice with three different strains of H. pylori and monitored their locomotor activity and dopamine levels in the brain. Mice infected with one of the strains showed significant reductions in both.
