M. Brian Fennerty, MD, FASGE, is professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Ore., and the current president of the American Society for Gastroinestinal Endoscopy.
In his role, Dr. Fennerty will work on important issues including who should perform endoscopy and what type of sedation endoscopists should be allowed to use during endoscopic procedures. One of Dr. Fennerty's initiatives as president is the launching of "The Preservation and Incorporation of Valuable Endoscopic Innovations That Improve Digestive Health" program, which will help to foster and preserve endoscopic innovations aimed at improving digestive health.
"I look forward to serving as ASGE's president and my goal for the year ahead is to center the ASGE as the leading organization when it comes to any issue regarding endoscopy and patient care, and to continue the Society's focus on quality in endoscopy to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients," said Dr. Fennerty in a May ASGE press release.
Dr. Fennerty is an authority on gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus and Helicobacter pylori. He was the founding editor of Journal Watch Gastroenterology in 2000 and has served as its editor in chief ever since. He also serves on the editorial board of a number of other professional publications.
