Study results suggest split-dose MiraLAX in 64 oz. Gatorade is not as effective as 4 L split-dose GoLytely in bowel prep before colonoscopies, according to an article published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Researchers conducted a prospective trial involving 403 patients. The patients were randomly assigned to groups given GoLytely, MiraLAX, MiraLAX with 10 mg bisacodyl or MiraLAX with 24 μg lubiprostone. MiraLAX was combined with 64 oz. of Gatorade. The patients were asked about preparation satisfaction and tolerability following the trial, and the Ottawa bowel preparation scale was utilized to measure colon cleanliness.
GoLytely was more effective at bowel cleansing than MiraLAX alone, in combination with lubiprostone or bisacodyl. MiraLAX was associated with longer procedure duration. However, patients given MiraLAX reported a more satisfactory experience than those given GoLytely. There were no differences between polyp detection rates or adverse events.
