Study: Endoscopic Therapy vs. Surgery as Treatment for Early Esophageal Cancer

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., recently published a study in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology comparing endoscopic therapy and surgery as treatments for superficial esophageal adenocarcinoma.

The researchers used a national cancer database to examine outcomes in EAC patients undergoing endoscopic therapy and esophagectomy. The researchers found that the long-term survival rate of EAC patients appeared similar between those undergoing endoscopic therapy and surgery.

The authors of the study included Herbert C. Wolfson, MD, Michael B. Wallace, MD, and Saowanee Ngamruengphong, MD.
