Bariatric surgery can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes, and improvement was more rapid and complete after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric-bypass surgery, according to a report by the Lancet.
A study of obese patients found bariatric surgery can lead to significant weight loss and remission of diabetes in many cases, with improved metabolic control in 72 percent of patients two years out and 36 percent of patients 10 years out.
Researchers said bariatric surgery should not simply be a last resort for obese patients with type 2 diabetes and could be added to their treatment algorithms.
