Preliminary data indicate gastric plication could become a surgical option to help very obese individuals shed excess weight, but more study is needed, according to a report by Internal Medicine News.
In a small study with 15 patients, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic showed that plication of the anterior stomach or greater curvature can lead to early and significant weight loss in morbidly obese patients.
Both techniques involve folding the stomach in on itself and suturing the fold in place, creating a smaller stomach space.
