The Society of General Internal Medicine elected Gisele Corbie-Smith, MD, as its 41st president.
Here's what you should know.
1. Dr. Corbie-Smith will be inducted at the society's 2018 Annual Meeting, April 13 in Denver.
2. She is a professor of medicine at Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She is an accomplished researcher with a background of work focused on the methodological, ethical and practical issues faced by the mandated inclusion of minorities in research, and the importance of that research in addressing racial disparities in healthcare.
3. Former HHS Acting Assistant Secretary Karen DeSalvo, MD, was selected as the society's president-elect, and Mitch Feldman, MD, was named secretary-elect.
4. Maria Frank, MD, and Reena Karani, MD, were both appointed to the society's council.
