Personality types, car brands & exercise statistics — 8 facts on gastroenterologists' lifestyles

Medscape released its "2018 Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report," compiling physicians' opinions on a wide array of lifestyle choices.

Medscape surveyed 15,543 physicians from over 29 specialties to create its snapshot of physicians' lifestyles.

Here's what you should know:

1. While 76 percent of total respondents reported being happy outside of work overall, only 53 percent of gastroenterologists said report happieness with their life outside of work. Out of 29 specialties, gastroenterologists ranked No. 10 overall among happiness with life outside of work.

2. Seventy-three percent of physicians said they had either spiritual or religious beliefs, and 76 percent of respondents said belief systems helped them cope with work-related stress.

3. Concerning personality types, gastroenterologists were among the most extroverted physicians. Approximately 34 percent of GI respondents said they were extroverts, putting them among the top three extroverted specialties.

4. However, concerning personal friendships, 50 percent of gastroenterologists reported having three or fewer close friends. Pathologists, intensivists, radiologists and anesthesiologists were most likely to have three or fewer closer friends.

5. When it comes to automobile choice, 21 percent of physicians drive Toyotas, 16 percent prefer Hondas and 9 percent opt for BMWs.

6. In general, specialty physicians tend to drive more expensive cars than primary care physicians. Specialists purchase more BMWs, Lexuses and Mercedes-Benzes than primary care physicians.

7. Concerning weight loss and overall health, 47 percent of overall respondents said they wanted to lose weight.

8. When it comes to exercise, 89 percent of physicians exercise at least once a week, with the majority exercising between two and three times a week.

Note: Gastroenterologists made up 2 percent of overall survey respondents.
