Atul Kumar, MD, a gastroenterologist and Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital professor, has co-launched a nutritional search engine and database, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.
NutritionRank — hosted at www.nutritionrank.com — is intended to eventually rank all of the different types of food people eat. It uses an algorithm that assigns a rating for any individual food ingredient, recipe, packaged food item or restaurant dish.
The database currently provides information on packaged foods and big chain restaurant dishes (for which dietary information is readily available), but there are plans to expand the database.
Dr. Kumar is also the co-founder of the culinary website iFood.tv.
