NSQIP Data Shows 30% of Colorectal Surgery Patient Hospital Readmissions Are Preventable

A study recently published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons found that that the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program provided more accurate data tracking than the University HealthSystem Consortium for 30-day hospital readmissions in colorectal surgery patients.

The study suggests that with proper data analysis and improved patient care, more than 30 percent of colorectal surgery patient 30-day readmissions could be prevented.

CMS is expected to increase its reimbursement penalties for 30-day readmissions of Medicare patients to 2 percent in 2014 and 3 percent in 2015.
