The Good Samaritan Hospital of Kearney, Neb. has won the Prevent Cancer Foundation's Screening Saves Lives Challenge for 2012, according to a news release.
The challenge is a national competition for organizations to submit their best colorectal cancer screening and awareness initiatives for their communities.
The theme of the 2012 challenge, the second year the event was held, was families.
Good Samaritan Hospital will use the $5,000 Foundation grant it received for winning the challenge to hold a family-focused event centered around the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer.
"We are thrilled and honored to receive the Prevent Cancer grant — Nebraska has one of the highest incidence and mortality rates in the United States," said Dana Welsh, program representative at Good Samaritan Hospital, in the release. "We feel that it is essential for us educate people about the importance of prevention and early detection and this grant will allow us to do that and further enhance our existing annual colorectal screening program."
