Recent studies suggest that transnasal endoscopy could be an acceptable Barrett's esophagus screening tool, according to a Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News report. One such study even posited that TNE could be performed in a vehicle styled as a mobile research unit.
TNE can be performed without sedation and, thanks to recent technological advancements, has become more portable.
"Maybe when reimbursement becomes higher for transnasal endoscopy than for standard endoscopy with propofol sedation, transnasal endoscopy will be better utilized," said Joel Richter, MD, director of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the University of South Florida in Tampa, according to the report.
