A presenter at the American College of Sports Medicine's 15th annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition reported that gastrointestinal problems are some of the most common medical complaints of endurance athletes, according to an ACSM news release.
Research shows 30-81 percent of distance runners experience some type of GI disturbance. The three most common GI disturbances in endurance athletes are gastroesophageal reflux disease, exercise-induced GI bleeding and diarrhea.
