Gastroenterologist & former UCLA medical school dean Dr. Sherman Mellinkoff dies: 4 things to know

Gastroenterologist Sherman Mellinkoff, MD, who led the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine for 24 years, passed away at the age of 96 years. 


Here are four things to know:

1. Dr. Mellinkoff was made the medical school's dean in 1962.

2. The school grew from its inaugural class of 28 students to include 1,500 interns, residents and fellows as well as 3,000 alumni members under Dr. Mellinkoff.

3. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and served as vice president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

4. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
