Paul R. Tourigny, MD, a gastroenterologist at CarolinaEast Internal Medicine in Pollocksville, N.C., is researching and working to develop drug therapies to treat and possibly cure hepatitis C, according to a Sun Journal report.
Dr. Tourigny's drug cocktails, which include drugs similar to protease inhibitors used to treat HIV infection, are intended to help stop progression of the disease and other positive outcomes, including preventing cirrhosis, reducing risk for liver cancer and reducing the need for liver transplantation.
Such drug therapies are available to patients at CarolinaEast Gastroenterology, and their use has brought about positive results, according to the report.
