Gastroenterologist depression and burnout by the numbers 

Medscape laid out key statistics on gastroenterologist mental health in its "Gastroenterologist Lifestyle & Happiness Report 2024" published March 8. 

Here are five sets of stats from the survey of 9,226 physicians:

1. How gastroenterologists try to maintain their happiness and mental health:

  • Spending time with family/friends: 82%
  • Exercise: 67%
  • Activities/hobbies: 63%
  • Sleep more: 53%
  • Eat healthy: 46%
  • Therapy: 9%
  • Other: 9%
  • None of the above: 3%

2. Of the surveyed gastroenterologists, 55% would take a pay cut for a better work-life balance, compared to 59% in 2023 and 57% in 2022. 

3. How gastroenterologists prioritize personal and family time:

  • Very important: 76%
  • Somewhat important: 20%
  • Not very important: 3%
  • Not at all important: 1%

4. How conflicted gastroenterologists are as parents are due to work demands:

  • Very conflicted: 38%
  • Somewhat conflicted: 30%
  • Not at all/not very conflicted: 31%

5. How much vacation gastroenterologists take:

  • Less than a week a year: 6%
  • One to two weeks a year: 19%
  • Three to four weeks a year: 50%
  • Five to six weeks a year: 22%
  • More than six weeks a year: 4%
