Merritt Hawkins 2018 report of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting incentives found the demand for medical specialists like gastroenterologists is growing.
Here are the key findings from the report:
1. GIs were offered $355,000 as a base salary, and earned on average $487,000, making them one of the highest-compensated medical specialists.
2. GIs were the fourth most in-demand specialist behind allergy and immunology, cardiology and dermatology.
3. The report cited the Health Resources and Services Administration's projections that GI physicians will be one of several internal medicine subspecialists to be in short supply by 2025.
4. Merritt Hawkins found 62 percent of recruiting assignments occurred in communities of 100,000 or more, showing the increasing demand for specialists who tend to practice in larger communities.
