A new study found fecal immunochemical testing is more effective than guaiac fecal occult blood testing and is often performed at a lower cost, according to findings published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Using the MISCAN-Colon micro-simulation model, which stimulates the biographic information for large populations, researchers in the Netherlands estimated the number of colonoscopies, costs and health effects of different screening strategies using FIT and gFOBT. In situations with unlimited capacity for colonoscopy screening capacity, they found screening with the lowest FIT cutoff level produced optimal results. In situations with limited colonoscopy screening capacity, which is more like real-world situations, FIT with a higher cutoff level performed better than gFOBT.
