Educational Booklet May Enhance Colonoscopy Preparation

Study results suggest providing patients with an educational booklet on proper bowel preparation could considerably improve the quality of colonoscopy preparation for patients receiving single-dose purgatives, according to research published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

For their study, researchers conducted interviews with patients and used the resulting knowledge to develop an educational booklet. The educational booklet was then tested for effectiveness. A total of 436 patients were randomized to either receive the educational booklet or the usual instructions for bowel preparation before a colonoscopy. Results of the study showed the booklet increased the odds of good preparation by 3.7 times.
