Dr. Peter Marcello teaches laparoscopic course for colorectal surgery — 5 takeaways

Peter W. Marcello, MD, is currently offering a course in laparoscopic skills for colorectal disease, according to Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Initially, the course was one day and featured lectures, videos and practice sessions on cadavers. The program is geared largely toward the new generation of surgeons who have grown up on laparoscopic techniques, but may still have gaps in their training or need to reinforce what they have learned.

2. Before the course begins, students must submit a five-minute video of a recent laparoscopic case so that Dr. Marcello can assess their skill level and group surgeons with similar training and abilities.

3. After the course is over, students are encouraged to send their mentors full-length videos of their first two laparoscopic cases.

4. The next course will take place on June 3 and 4 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.

5. Dr. Marcello earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He completed his fellowship at the Lahey Hitchcock Clinic in Burlington, Mass.
