Berkeley Medical Center debuts robotic-assisted colon resection surgeries: 3 details

Three physicians recently completed the first robotic-assisted colon resection surgeries at Martinsburg, W.Va.-based Berkeley Medical Center.

1. Jason Turner, MD, Robert Cicchino, DO, and Zachary Ewart, MD, are the physicians who debuted robotic-assisted colon resection surgery at the hospital.

2. Colon resection surgery is used to treat conditions such as colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticulitis, according to Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine.

3. Robotic assistance enables surgeons to make smaller incisions, resulting in less postoperative pain and faster recovery for patients.
