American Board of Surgery to Require Standardized Endoscopy Training

The American Board of Surgery will require all general surgery residents applying for board certification to complete a standardized national curriculum in endoscopy techniques beginning in 2017, according to a Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News report.

Endoscopy is one of the top five procedures performed by general surgeons, according to the report. The new policy will be enacted partly due to complaints from professional GI societies that argued general surgery residents did not receive enough endoscopy training.

Instead of focusing on a set number of procedures, the new curriculum will require residents to pass national tests on endoscopy skill and knowledge.
