The American Gastroenterological Association says gastroenterologists planning to use computed tomographic colonography, an alternative to traditional colonoscopy, should undergo more training than previously recommended, according to an Internal Medicine News report.
In a departure from the 2007 standards, the update supports CTC for routine colorectal cancer screening in average-risk asymptomatic patients. Citing insufficient research in 2007, AGA now states "several multidisciplinary groups involved in CRC [colorectal cancer] screening guideline development, including the AGA, have endorsed CT colonography for CRC screening."
By pledging its support, the AGA joins the American Cancer Society and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Technology Evaluation Center.
