The American Gastroenterological Association awarded Anna S. Lok, MD, the 2016 William Beaumont Prize in Gastroenterology for her contributions in liver diseases and gastroenterology, according to UMHS News.
Dr. Lok is the Alice Lohrman Andrews Research Professor in hepatology at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.
Here are five highlights:
1. Dr. Lok's contribution to hepatitis C research demonstrated it is possible to cure hepatitis C with interferon-free regimens using a combination of direct-acting antiviral agents.
2. Dr. Lok has co-authored four iterations of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases guidelines on hepatitis B. The World Health Organization asked her to serve on its guideline development panel for hepatitis B and hepatitis C in 2014 and 2015.
3. Dr. Lok is in line to become the president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2017.
4. Dr. Lok currently serves as director of clinical hepatology and assistant dean for clinical research at the University of Michigan Health System.
5. Dr. Lok earned her medical degree from the University of Hong Kong and completed her residency at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. She also completed a hepatology fellowship at Royal Free Hospital in England.
