Last week, the American Gastroenterological Association, in conjunction with the other GI societies and the Alliance of Specialty Medicine, travelled to Capitol Hill to discuss the Medicare Patient Access and Quality Improvement Act.
The legislation would repeal the sustainable growth rate and aims to shift physicians to a value-based payment system. Three committees have influence over Medicare physician payment. The Congressional Budget Office recently announced the costs associated with each version of the legislation.
• Ways and Means: $121 billion
• Energy and Commerce: $146 billion
• Senate Finance: $148.6 billion
The GI society and Alliance representatives attended 29 meetings in three days. The AGA remains concerned about the freeze in updates and the payments gastroenterologists face for upper endoscopy and potentially colonoscopy.
