The American Board of Internal Medicine is in the process of developing a longitudinal assessment option for clinicians looking to maintain their certification.
What you should know:
1. ABIM is developing self-paced pathways for clinicians to demonstrate ongoing knowledge. The traditional longform assessment will remain available while ABIM further develops the self-paced option.
2. The new option allows clinicians to work on their certification maintenance process continuously and at their own pace. Clinicians will be able to use the resources in their practice for the certification.
3. The new option also provides instantaneous feedback. After answering a question, the system will immediately tell clinicians whether they're right or wrong. The system will also provide educational resources to help clinicians close any knowledge gaps that may exist.
4. A group of internists filed a lawsuit against ABIM over the maintenance-of-certification program in December 2018, alleging ABIM prevented competition by tying initial board certification to its maintenance-of-certification exams.
