In the past year, several gastroenterologists have faced allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to HIPAA violations:
1. Utah gastroenterologist Steven Porter, MD, agreed to pay the HHS' Office of Civil Rights $100,000 for a corrective action plan related to a potential violation of a HIPAA security rule.
2. The New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct revoked the license of Mirza Beg, MD, who admitted to sending sexually explicit text messages to a minor who was his former patient.
3. Neelesh Ajit Tipnis, MD, surrendered his medical license to the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure Jan. 23, after being accused of sexual battery of a teenager.
4. Fort Myers, Fla.-based gastroenterologist Asif Choudhury, MD, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery.
5. The Florida Department of Health placed an emergency restriction order on the medical license of Subhash Gupta, MD, alleging he inappropriately touched a woman multiple times during an emergency room exam. Under the restriction order, Dr. Gupta can't see female patients anymore.
6. Houston gastroenterologist Yolanda Hamilton, MD, was found guilty of participating in a $16 million Medicare fraud scheme.
7. Summit, N.J.-based pediatric gastroenterologist Michael Tyshkov, MD, was formally indicted on six counts of sexual assault-related offenses by a Union County, N.J.-based grand jury.
