6 Statistics on GI Infections in the U.S.

Non-foodborne gastroenteritis affected 135 million people in the United States in 1998, while foodborne illness affected 76 million people. Here are four statistics on the care and morality associated with gastrointestinal infections, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse Digestive Disease Statistics for the United States report.

•    Ambulatory care visits: 2.3 million (2004)
•    Hospitalizations: 487,000 (2010)
•    Prescriptions: 938,000 (2004)
•    Mortality: 11,022 deaths (2011)
