3 Best Practices for Maintaining High Case Volume at Your GI-Driven ASC

Connie Casey, administrator at Northpoint Surgery Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., discusses three ways the center is able to maintain high GI case volume.

1. Form a team of dedicated physicians. Ms. Casey attributes much of the ability for the center to maintain high volume to the physicians on staff and their dedication to their work in the GI specialty. Over the years, their commitment to providing quality care has only expanded their reputation in the community, which ultimately brings in more patients.

"The physicians I have on staff are very well-known physicians in the area, and they're very dedicated to my facility," she says. "Whenever they have to do a procedure, they make an exceptional effort to bring those procedures to my facility."

2. Provide patient-centered care. Focusing on providing high quality care for each patient not only ensures patients receive the care they need to recover any GI-related conditions but also gives them a reason to come back.

"I have patients come back to this facility because of the nurses and physicians that I have," Ms. Casey says. "Everyone puts forth exceptional effort for all the patients, including the scheduling department, billing and collecting, nurses in the OR or recovery room and so on. I have letters that come in every week from patients saying they have never met a more professional staff that is so kind and courteous."

3. Market the center, its physicians and services. Ms. Casey says a significant amount of time is put toward recruiting new physicians in the area. Expanding the number of physicians at the surgery center allows more patients to receive care from the center. Additionally, Northpoint's reputation and services spread by word of mouth through its relationships with other facilities as well as news coverage of its hardship cases, which are cases in which a patient without insurance who isn't accepted at another facility is taken in at Northpoint. These situations, Ms. Casey says, also help drive up case volume.

"Ultimately, the facility is well-known in the area and speaks well for itself. The facility has great rapport with other facilities, so whenever they need anything I don't hesitate to let them borrow any supplies, and that shows our integrity," she says. "We also do a lot of hardship cases, and we do those every week."
